DAEGU, Jul. 26 (Korea Bizwire) — According to the Daegu municipal government on Tuesday, the city’s Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID)-based smart waste management system is now available to over 190,000 households.

Since RFID tags for trash cans were first launched in the city in 2011, the local government claims a reduction of over 30 percent in the quantity of food garbage produced.

The RFID tags, which are affixed to trash cans commonly located at apartment complexes, calculate waste disposal fees then and there after measuring the volume of waste to be discarded. The meter-rate system is thought to help reduce the amount of waste produced, as people are encouraged to save money by doing so.

The RFID system is thought to be useful particularly in warmer weather as problems such as trash can odors and harmful insects are exacerbated during the hot summer months.

Following the program’s success over the past few years, Daegu government officials plan to inject 480 million into installing an additional 240 trash cans with RFID tags by the end of this year.

“Efforts at home to reduce food garbage are most important. We’ll continue to increase the number of trash cans with RFID tags each year,” said city official Jo Dong-du.
