SEOUL, Aug. 20 (Korea Bizwire) – The oversized check shirt, once associated with the stereotypical “engineering student” look, is making a surprising comeback in South Korean fashion circles, according to Musinsa, one of the country’s leading online fashion retailers.
On August 19, Musinsa reported a significant surge in the popularity of check shirts, with search volumes for these items tripling compared to the same period last year. The company also noted a 43% increase in sales within the casual shirt category.
This resurgence of the check shirt, traditionally viewed as a basic wardrobe staple rather than a trendy item, is attributed to its versatility in complementing various fashion styles currently in vogue. These include “Y2K” (a nostalgic nod to early 2000s fashion), “geek chic,” and “Western look.”
The current trend favors wearing oversized check shirts as outerwear or opting for bold colors like red or pink to add a striking accent to an outfit. This approach aligns with the broader shift in Korean fashion towards more expressive and individualistic styles.
Recognizing this trend, Musinsa has expanded its offerings, with over 900 different check shirt designs released in their Spring/Summer 2024 collection alone.
A spokesperson for Musinsa stated, “This year, we’re seeing high demand for check shirts that showcase each brand’s unique identity through diverse patterns and colors.”
They added, “The versatility of these shirts, suitable for both casual and formal styles, suggests they will continue to be a key item in the upcoming Fall/Winter season.”
