SEOUL, Jan. 21 (Korea Bizwire) — A series of sex scandals involving famous celebrities in South Korea are pushing parents to educate their children about sex.
“After the Jung Joon-young scandal, I felt that sex education at an early age is important,” a post on a local mom’s cafe, an online forum for mothers, said.
“Even if it involves private lessons, we need to teach our children to grow healthy sexual awareness.”
An advertisement post by a sex education instructor soon received dozens of comments asking for contact information.
Sex scandals involving celebrities have also motivated more people to contact sex education institutions.
More parents are looking for ways to teach their children about sex at an early age. Some of the children have just entered elementary school or are still in kindergarten.
“Recently, we’ve been getting twice the calls we used to get in the past, mostly from parents asking about sex education for their children. After the Jung Joon-young scandal, many parents asked us to teach their sons. Now, there are more parents asking for education programs for their daughters,” said Lee Seok-won, head of a sex education institution.
“In the past, there used to be almost no consultations about teaching younger elementary school children. Now, the calls have jumped by 30 percent. We’re even getting requests from parents with children under 7 years old.”
Sex education instructor Ahn Seon-jin also explained that public education has been “falling behind social trends where children gain early access to pornography,” saying that private sex education is trying to fill that gap before children become aware of porn.
“We can find that many young children have a distorted perception towards sex, and that is why we need to educate them in a manner suited for their age and curiosity,” Ahn added.
