SEOUL, Apr. 25 (Korea Bizwire) — POSCO, South Korea’s largest steelmaker, said Thursday it will spend 350 billion won (US$302 million) to build new byproduct gas power generating facilities at its main steel mill.
The new byproduct gas power plants inside its still mill in Pohang, some 370 kilometers southeast of Seoul, will be completed by October 2021. They will replace current power generating facilities that have been used for the past 42 years.
Byproduct gases generated during the steelmaking process, such as blast furnace gas and coke oven gas, are useful energy sources for the steelmakers to run their plants.
POSCO said the new facilities will have a capacity of 150 megawatts, 50 percent higher than the current ones, and will be equipped with the latest technologies to reduce fine dust chemicals.
