SEOUL, Oct. 16 (Korea Bizwire) – Korean singer and entertainer PSY and professor Seo Gyeong-duk from Sungshin Women’s University have started to distribute K-Pop brochures at American universities.
The brochures, sensibly made out of eco-friendly materials, contain various information about K-Pop – the definition, history, secret to popularity, culture and ‘sing alongs’ (when the audience all sings together with the artist) – all written in English.
Professor Seo commented that he decided to distribute K-Pop brochures ever since Korean students studying in America started to ask questions about K-Pop as the genre was recognized in U.S. He felt the need for a text that introduces K-Pop to the locals, and made the brochures with input from the students before distributing them in universities.
He added that he selected PSY to be the model for the brochure since he is the most recognized K-Pop artist in the world. Professor Seo completed the brochure ‘PSY says K-POP’, and distributed copies at New York University (NYU), Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) and Brown University, selecting places with a lot of human traffic so that the material would be exposed to as many individuals as possible.
“Foreign fans who like K-Pop in general instead of just liking one artist in particular are increasing. I hope the brochure could be an opportunity to get closer to those fans,” said PSY, commenting on his expectation of the effects the brochure would bring.
Professor Seo plans to distribute the brochure in other regions as well, and hopes to make versions in languages other than English to spread K-Pop to other countries. He also plans to gather more material on K-Pop to develop an application that will provide detailed information about the genre.
