SEOUL, May 17 (Korea Bizwire) — The Seoul Metropolitan Government said Tuesday it had replaced one of the 23 cremation furnaces at the Seoul Crematorium in Goyang, Gyeonggi Province, with an environmentally friendly alternative.
The new cremation furnace incorporates internet-of-things (IoT) technology, which adjusts gas, air, and pressure levels to ensure optimal combustion throughout the entire process.
Last month, the Seoul Facilities Corp. conducted a pilot operation to stabilize and enhance the performance of the furnace.
The results demonstrated a reduction in cremation time from 120 minutes to 100 minutes, resulting in approximately 30 percent savings in fuel consumption.
The facility operator has planned a phased replacement of all 23 cremation furnaces with eco-friendly alternatives. This initiative entails replacing seven furnaces in 2024, another seven in 2025, and the remaining eight by late 2026.
Upon completion of these replacements, the maximum daily cremation capacity will increase from 96 to 116, effectively adding the equivalent of 4.6 cremation furnaces.
