SEOUL, March 24 (Korea Bizwire) – Crime in South Korea is on the rise, while the number of volunteers is continuously falling, according to a new report by Statistics Korea published yesterday.

The surprising findings revealed that only 10.4 percent of individuals younger than fifteen participated in any type of volunteer work over the past year, indicative of a gradual downward trend from 2012 (11.9 percent).

The report also revealed that a total of 2.02 million crimes were reported in 2015, with the crime rate up 4.5 percent on year. Going into detail, the number of theft and robbery offenses fell but violent crimes such as homicide and sexual crimes saw a significant increase. Theft and assault accounted for 90 percent of all crimes.

Nearly four times more sexual crimes were committed in 2015 (31,000 cases) compared to 2000 (7,000), according to the report.

House prices in 2016 experienced a slight increase of 0.7 percent compared to the year before, with the average price of apartments being the most expensive in the property market.

Cultural facilities such as museums and art galleries also increased in number. As of 2015, the number of concert facilities in South Korea was estimated at 1,290, a drastic increase from 821 in 2006. During the same time, the number of museums doubled.

The number of people with a landline phone number decreased by 3.6 percent, while mobile phone users increased by 4.1 percent.

The report also found nearly seven out of ten mobile phone users had a smartphone (77 percent).

The average number of hours spent online per week was 14.3, with 88% of the population having access to the internet.

Koreans in their 20s spent an average of 22.8 hours online while those in their 40s spent 15.3 hours per week.

Cancer was the leading cause of death in South Korea, responsible for the deaths of 150.8 in every 100,000 people.

South Koreans consumed a net total of 484,000 GWh of electricity in 2015.
