SEOUL, July 24 (Korea Bizwire)South Korean researchers have developed an equation to assess the risk of dementia for individuals with Parkinson’s disease, a university said Thursday.

A research team led by Lee Phil-hyu and Chung Seok-jong, professors of neurology at Yonsei University College of Medicine, had developed a model and an equation tool called a nomogram to assess the risk of dementia for individuals with Parkinson’s disease using a neurocognitive test.

Parkinson’s disease refers to a degenerative brain disease which occurs when dopamine-producing neurons die.

Considering that individuals with Parkinson disease tend to have a higher chance of experiencing dementia, it’s worthwhile to try to identify those who are more likely to get dementia among them.

There are some reports that 45 percent of those who suffer from Parkinson’s disease for more than 10 years and 80 percent of those who suffer from the disease for more than 20 years develop dementia.

After observing 350 Parkinson’s disease patients for an average period of 5.6 years, the research team found that the neurocognitive test conducted in early stages of diagnosis can predict the possibility of the onset of dementia.

During the research period, 78 (22.3 percent) out of 350 Parkinson disease patients experienced the onset of dementia.

The neurocognitive test showed that the frontal lobe function turned out to have the strongest impact on the development of dementia.

By using the research data, the research team developed a mathematical formula called a nomogram to calculate the patient’s risk of getting dementia within five years after being diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease.
