SEOUL, Aug. 31 (Korea Bizwire) — Developers of new apartment complexes in Korea will be obliged to install electric vehicle (EV) chargers at 5 percent of the total number of parking spaces, while existing apartment complexes will be required to have EV chargers at a minimum of 2 percent of their parking spaces.
The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy announced advance legislation notice for the revised enforcement ordinance of the Environment-Friendly Automobile Act.
Under the revision, the type of apartment complexes that are required to have EV chargers installed will be changed from ones with more than 500 units to ones with more than 100 units.
The type of public facilities and parking lots that are required to install EV chargers will also be changed from ones with more than 100 parking spaces to ones with more than 50 parking spaces.
When it comes to the number of mandatory installations, brand-new buildings that receive their building permit after the revision goes into effect will be required to have EV chargers equivalent to 5 percent of their total parking spaces.
Existing buildings that received building permits before the revision goes into effect will be required to have EV chargers equivalent to 2 percent of their total parking spaces.
At present, the mandatory installation ratio is set at 0.5 percent for brand-new buildings and zero for existing buildings.
The revision will take effect from late January 2022 after going through a series of regulation reviews and a Cabinet meeting.
