SEOUL, Feb. 13 (Korea Bizwire) — South Korea plans to carry out a landmine and ordnance disposal operation in Vietnam, an overseas aid agency said Sunday.
The Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) announced that it has been engaged in a peacebuilding project in Vietnam’s Binh Dinh, Quang Ngai and Thua Thien Hue provinces in cooperation with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
The project is expected to be completed in 2026.
The agency will first set up strategies and procedures for clearing out landmines and other ordnance in the area, and carry out land contamination investigations and disposal operations in priority locations in accordance with international standards.
The agency will also improve the region’s landmine response information management system, and bolster the capacity of the state and local government in raising public awareness of landmines, explosive ordnance and other hazardous materials.
The agency will set up strategies for and revamp the registry of survivors and disabled persons and provide medical services.
The disposal operations will be carried out by the Vietnam National Mine Action Center (VNMAC)
