SEOUL, March 19 (Korea Bizwire) — South Korea will give bonuses worth a total of 3.3 billion won (US$3.07 million) to its athletes and coaches who participated in the PyeongChang Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games, the country’s sports ministry said Monday.
The Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism said it will award 3.3 billion won to 254 athletes and coaches — 186 for the Olympics and 68 for the Paralympics — for their performances at PyeongChang 2018.
The ministry said a gold medalist will receive 63 million won, while a silver medalist will get 30 million won and a bronze medalist will be given 25 million won. For medalists in team sports, 47.25 million won will be presented to gold medal winners, 26.25 million won given to each member of silver-winning teams and 18.75 million won to those of bronze-winning teams.
Head coaches will receive 80 million won for gold, while 60 million won will given to assistant coaches. Those who didn’t win medal at the Games will receive 3 million won each.
Medalists at the Olympics and the Paralympics will receive same amount of money.
The ministry said 2.5 billion won will be given to the South Korean Olympic delegation, while the country’s Paralympic delegation will get 800 million won.
Forty South Korean athletes won medals at the Feb. 9-25 PyeongChang Olympics, with short tracker Choi Min-jeong earning two golds. South Korea won five gold, eight silver and four bronze medals to finish seventh in the medal standings at the 23rd Winter Olympics.
For the March 9-18 PyeongChang Paralympics, 22 athletes received medals, with para Nordic skier Sin Eui-hyun becoming the first South Korean to win a Winter Paralympic Games gold medal.
Sin was the lone South Korean medalist in individual competitions at the 12th Winter Paralympics. He won two of South Korea’s three medals in sitting cross-country skiing events. The men’s ice sledge hockey team also won bronze.
South Korea had its best ever Winter Paralympic Games performance in PyeongChang, with one gold an two bronze medals, and finished 16th among 49 nations.
