SEOUL, Dec. 27 (Korea Bizwire) – The Korea Expressway Corporation announced on December 26 that it would complete installation of solar power energy equipment on the roof of a 1.3 km long soundproof tunnel in Gwanggyo, Gyeonggi Province.
When the equipment begins producing energy early next month, it will be the first highway soundproof tunnel with solar power generation capabilities on its roof in South Korea.
The tunnel will produce 2.6 MW, enough energy for 1,000 households year round. A total of 4.4 billion won was invested in the project.
The Korea Expressway Corporation expects the project to result in the decline of 1,500 tons of carbon dioxide emissions and 5 tons of fine dust on an annual basis.
The Korea Expressway Corporation began its forays into solar power generation in December of 2012, installing solar panels and equipment onto unusable roads. Since then, it has expanded possible locations for supporting solar power generation to include highway rest areas and around interchanges. Currently, 80 locations are producing 41 MW of energy.
