SEOUL, Jun. 15 (Korea Bizwire) — Samsung Electronics revealed yesterday that it will be installing solar power generators at all of its business facilities in the U.S., Europe and China.
In Korea, some but not all facilities will be equipped with solar power generating systems.
To kick off the initiative, Samsung will install solar panels in parking lots and on rooftops at its Suwon campus spanning an area of 42,000 square meters.
Next year, solar power facilities will be put into place at the electronics giant’s Pyeongtaek campus, and a similar facility in Hwaseong by 2020.
Samsung explained that it plans to follow the government’s proposal to expand renewable energy use so that it accounts for 20 percent of all power consumption in the nation.
In line with this measure, Samsung says it will push forward efforts to use 100 percent renewable energy in its operations in the U.S., Europe and China, where infrastructure for renewable energy is more accessible.
Samsung also plans to become a member of the CDP Supply Chain Program, which will help manage the risks associated with climate change at Samsung’s partners.
In line with this plan, the Korean conglomerate will advise that its top 100 working partners reveal their status on renewable energy.
In response to Samsung’s eco-friendly announcement, Green Peace, the non-governmental environmental organization, said that it has been pressing Samsung to set an example for other companies by taking on business practices that are more sustainable for the environment.
As such, the environmental advocacy group welcomed Samsung’s new stance on renewable energy.
