SEOUL, June 6 (Korea Bizwire) – Change is coming to Samsung, with its latest strategy part of efforts to transform itself into a developer and software-centered company.

The company has recently instituted a ‘product ownership system’ in one of its wireless business departments. This pilot system is another portrayal of Samsung’s efforts to shift away from its core hardware and manufacturer-focused business to a more software and developer-focused one.

In its new system, product ownership is fully vested to the employee in charge, who will have 100% authority and responsibility over the entire production process such as development and manufacturing.

“The new system grants product ownership to employees regardless of their rank or position,” said a Samsung official. “And the idea is to provide the employee with full authority over his or her project.”

However, the system is not only limited to products. It also includes software, mobile applications, and product modules. And although it’s currently limited to Samsung’s wireless business department, there is a possibility for Samsung to expand the system to other departments.

“We want to continue encouraging our employees with free and innovative thinking by eliminating the restraint factors,” said Lee In-jong, vice president of Samsung’s wireless department.
