SEOUL, Feb. 17 (Korea Bizwire) – Samsung Electronics Co. on Wednesday introduced a new system chip that utilizes the ground-breaking 14-nanometer technology for better efficiency and could be used in a wider scope of electronic devices including budget smartphones.
Samsung Electronics said it plans to begin the mass production of the Exynos 7 Octa 7870, its latest system-on-chip that integrates all components of a computer or other electronic systems onto a single integrated circuit, in the first quarter of 2016.
The 14 nanometer FinFET process technology uses a three-dimensional process to enable more efficient power usage than the traditional methods.
While chips produced from such technology were only applied in high-end smartphones previously, Samsung Electronics said the Exynos 7870 will also be used in more affordable devices.
The Exynos 7870 boasts 30 percent higher power efficiency compared to the existing models that adopt 28-nanometer technology. The product also supports long-term evolution speed and has the Global Navigation Satellite System to provide better location-based data to users.
Samsung said it aims to have more budget devices adopt the new product that boasts improved power efficiency and features.
The company began the industry’s first production of the 14-nanometer AP, the Exynos 7 Octa 7420, early last year.’
