SEOUL, March 13 (Korea Bizwire) — Samsung SDS Co.’s Dongtan Data Center, arguably the first Internet Data Center for High Performance Computing (HPC) in South Korea, is garnering attention with its eco-friendly server cooling method that doesn’t require power.
The method dissipates data server heat by utilizing external air in winter or in-between seasons when the external temperature is below 22 degrees Celsius, thereby saving significant amounts of energy.
The Dongtan IDC, located in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi Province, consists of six floors, including a main room that supplies electricity and four server rooms for data storage and processing.
Due to the massive amount of electricity consumed by IDCs, the Korean government is encouraging them to relocate to provincial areas and even considering delaying electricity supply for a certain period.
The importance of server stability and responsiveness to external variables has become more critical after Kakao Corp. experienced a shutdown last year due to an IDC fire.
Dongtan IDC’s unique cooling method involves blowing cold air from both sides of the server, which passes through a cooling device to recycle air and increase energy efficiency.
The main room on the first floor converts 22,900 volts of electricity from the state-run utility Korea Electric Power Corp. (KEPCO) into 6,600 volts that can be used by the IDC.
Additionally, it uses fourth generation lithium-ion batteries to supply electricity in emergency situations, which Samsung emphasizes is safe in similar risk scenarios.
Samsung SDS’ cloud service, Samsung Cloud Platform (SCP), focuses on providing customized cloud services for companies to meet their needs.
“We are currently offering SCP to various industries, including finance, manufacturing, and services,” stated Koo Hyung-joon, vice president of Samsung SDS’ Cloud Service Division, at the company’s headquarters in Seoul’s Songpa District.
“Moving forward, we plan to develop cloud services for artificial intelligence (AI), big data analysis, and R&D based on Dongtan IDC.” he added.
