SEOUL, Korea, Feb 25, 2014 (Korea Bizwire) – In a bid to follow eco-friendly manufacturing practices, Samsung Electronics began using bio-plastics to package TV accessories such as remote controllers and handbooks.

By using agricultural feedstocks such as sugar cane as one of the base materials, the electronics giant developed the bio-plastic film for the past seven month and finally received a “bio-based” eco-friendly certification from domestic and overseas authorities.

The Korea Bio Packaging Association grants the certification when products contain more than 25 percent of bio-material. Meanwhile, Belgium’s Vincotte grants “bio-based certifications” to products with more than 20 percent of bio-material.

Samsung also uses eco-friendly boxes with 100-percent recycled paper to package TV accessories of its premium smart TV and UHD TV. It prints its boxes and handbooks with inks made of soybean oil.

With these efforts, the company expects to reduce environment pollution by volatile organic compounds and 686 tons of greenhouse gases annually, which is equivalent to planting 240,000 trees a year.

An official at Samsung said, “By working to develop eco-friendly packaging materials as well as TV products, Samsung, as a leading company in the TV market, will lead the eco-friendly technologies.”
