Scary Side Effects from ‘Petit Plastic Surgery’

SEOUL, Feb.1 (Korea Bizwire)An individual referred to as ‘A’ bought a coupon for three Botox shots at a plastic surgery clinic for one million won. She received one shot, but didn’t see any progress. She asked for a refund for the remaining shots but was declined.

Another patient referred to as ‘B’ wasn’t able to close her mouth after she received Botox treatment. After suffering from similar symptoms for six months, she went to another hospital, and was informed that the nervous system in her face was damaged.

The Korea Consumer Agency announced that ‘Petit Plastic Surgery’, which refers to simple plastic surgery procedures, has become very popular among women, but more than 1,200 cases related to filler and Botox malfunctioning have been reported over the past three years.

According to the Korea Consumer Agency’s ‘1374 Consumer Consulting Center’, a total of 1,245 complaints related to filler and Botox have been filed since 2013.

Of the  complaints, 767 cases were related to side effects (61.6 percent), 182 cases were for unsatisfactory results (14.6 percent), and 158 cases were related to canceling payments or refunds (12.7 percent).

Analyzing the 524 cases of side effects from filler shots, 88 cases were related to inflammation (16.8 percent), while 65 cases reported swelling in the area of the injection (12.4 percent), ranking second.

More severe occurrences of side effects were also reported, including those related to asymmetry of the face (40 cases), skin dying (39 cases), bruising (27 cases), paresthesia (8 cases) and losing eyesight (8 cases).

In total, 429 complaints related to Botox were filed over the past three years. Blepharoptosis was the most reported side effect (54 cases). Instances of bruising (15 cases), inflammation (21 cases) and asymmetry (14 cases) were also reported.

The agency reported that before and after photos of the procedures could be helpful when medical disputes occur. It also advised potential plastic surgery patients to carefully verify the contract terms related to costs, cancelations and refunds.
