SEOUL, May 11 (Korea Bizwire) — The Seoul Metropolitan Government said Wednesday it will launch support programs to preserve residential areas with Korean traditional houses known as “hanok.”
The city government will offer subsidies for the repair of structural issues, such as leaking tiled roofs, pillar corrosion, and the detachment of plaster caused by the deterioration of tiles, wood, and soil, which are the main building materials used in traditional Korean houses.
As a way to prevent fires, the city will accept applications on a frequent basis and provide support for the replacement of aged internal wiring systems, the installation of stand-alone fire detectors, and grounding work.
The work will be divided into the first and second halves of the year.
The city government will determine whether or not to support renovation projects after conducting on-site inspections to assess the level of aging.
Additionally, to prevent termite infestations that occur in humid hanok and damage wooden structures, the city will subsidize the injection or application of wood preservatives and the treatment of the soil with appropriate chemicals.
