SEOUL, April 12 (Korea Bizwire)The Seoul Metropolitan Government has partnered with a group of domestic petrochemical companies to conduct a pilot project that recycles plastic waste using thermal pyrolysis technology.

The city government on Tuesday signed a business agreement with GS Caltex Corp., HD Hyundai Oilbank Co., LG Chem Ltd. and SK Geocentric Co.

Thermal pyrolysis is a process that involves heating plastic waste, including compound materials that are typically thrown away as general waste, to produce thermal pyrolysis oil.

As part of the agreement, the city government will collect plastic waste in collaboration with district offices and provide it to the petrochemical companies.

The companies will use the plastic waste to operate their thermal pyrolysis oil production facilities.

The city government estimates that recyclable plastic waste accounts for about 18 percent of household waste in garbage bags.
