SEOUL, July 29 (Korea Bizwire) — The Seoul Metropolitan Government on Thursday announced an initiative to add free Wi-Fi to streets and tourist attractions with a heavy floating population.
In collaboration with the Ministry of Science and ICT and major telecom operators, the city government installed 23,476 Wi-Fi routers throughout the city during the period from 2011 to last year.
This year, 4,530 Wi-Fi routers have already been added to various areas including the Cheonggye Stream, Itaewon tourist zone and the Gyeongdong Market, with plans to add 2,000 more in the second half of the year.
According to the city government’s analysis, the amount of data traffic at the city’s 216 most popular sites where public WiFi equipment was installed or expanded in the first half of this year increased by four to seven times compared to before installation.
In June, the city’s average daily Wi-Fi usage also increased by 2,540 gigabytes.
