SEOUL, Dec. 1 (Korea Bizwire)Seoul Grand Park said Friday it has brought in three red pandas, an internationally endangered species, from abroad and plans to disclose them to the public in March after quarantine and environmental adaptation procedures.

The red, or lesser, panda, which is famed as the model for Shifu, the teacher of the protagonist in the animation “Kung Fu Panda,” is a Class 1 endangered species designated under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). It is known that there are fewer than 10,000 red pandas left in the world due to habitat destruction and indiscriminate poaching.

Of the three, a pair arrived at Seoul Grand Park on Monday from Japan’s Tama Zoological Park under a mutual agreement signed on May 16. The female was born in July 2020, and the male was born one year earlier. The remaining red panda, a male, was brought in from Calgary Zoo on Nov. 20.

Seoul Grand Park said it will show the red pandas’ adaptation process on YouTube ahead of their public disclosure.
