SEOUL, Jan. 14 (Korea Bizwire) — The Seoul Metropolitan Government has announced plans to develop vehicles specially designed to serve as taxis, with the goal of introducing the new design by 2022.
The city included in its four-year plan a new taxi design to better resemble the city with inclusive features, benchmarking Britain’s signature Black Cabs and Japan’s Crown Taxis.
Seoul’s new taxi model will include back doors that open and close automatically. The ceiling will also be raised to expand interior space, with a larger trunk to accommodate more luggage.
The new vehicle will be equipped with only the most essential features for taxis to make it more affordable than conventional cars.
The cost reduction will be used to stabilize taxi fares, and promote the welfare of the taxi drivers. Maximizing fuel efficiency is also a part of the plan.
The new taxi design, just like in England and Japan, will become a new source of tourism in Seoul.
“Starting this year, we will engage with the public, the drivers, and others to develop the idea,” said a source from the Seoul Metropolitan Government.
