SEOUL, June 16 (Korea Bizwire) – The Seoul city government said Thursday it will officially designate a drone park along the Han River that flows through the capital city next week.
The Seoul Metropolitan Government said citizens will be able to freely fly their unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) that are up to 12 kilograms in weight under an altitude of 150 meters at the park in eastern Seoul starting June 25.
The city has allocated some 27,000 square meters to the newly created park after engaging in multiple talks on safety issues with related government organizations, including the transport ministry and the country’s military.
An information center will open at the park to guide citizens on utilization and safety issues regarding the operation of UAVs.
Those willing to use the park need to make a reservation online or offline on a first-come-first-served basis. The city government said it will regulate the number of drones flying at the same time to under 30 for safety reasons.
“Thanks to government deregulations, the possibility of growth in the drone industry has become even larger,” a city official said. “We will support citizens so that they can enjoy flying their drones safely and freely.”
According to the Aviation Act, drones are banned from many places in the country, specifically from the northern parts of Seoul. Areas around key public facilities, military installations and nuclear power plants are also no-fly zones.
