SEOUL, Jan. 16 (Korea Bizwire)SK Engineering and Construction Co. has recently received a series of construction orders only a month after signing a contract with Bloom Energy to supply fuel cell facilities in South Korea.

SK E&C announced on Tuesday that it had signed contracts with KT Corp. and Korea Midland Power Co. to supply fuel cell facilities, a performance achieved only a month after the company signed an exclusive contract with Bloom Energy.

SK E&C will be in charge of building a 6㎿ fuel cell power plant with Korea Midland Power Co. inside the world’s very first underground thermoelectric power plant below Seoul. It will also build 0.9㎿ fuel cell generators at two KT base stations.

Fuel cells are often viewed as a next generation source of electricity that is eco-friendly, noiseless, and emits no toxic substances.

Demand for fuel cells is expected to increase as the South Korean government incorporates fuel cells as a major component of the ‘hydrogen economy’ that it is looking to establish.

“Fuel cells are an eco-friendly source of energy that can come in various sizes to fit inside a city or to be used at home,” said Lee Wang-jae, a fuel cell executive at SK E&C.

“We plan to develop quality service models with the long-term vision to expand the industry.”
