SEOUL, Oct. 3 (Korea Bizwire) – Gas stations are undergoing a transformation, evolving from spaces where vehicles are refueled with gas to multifunctional spaces with a variety of features.
The profitability of gas stations has been on a downward trend due to the widespread adoption of electric vehicles (EVs), prompting gas station operators to seek ways to remain afloat by capitalizing on their existing strengths.
According to industry sources on Monday, SK Energy, in collaboration with SK REITs, the real estate investment unit of SK Group, revealed plans to develop its directly-run gas station sites into multi-energy platforms.
As part of this initiative, SK gas stations across the country will be revamped into multifaceted stations, equipped with a range of functions such as refueling, EV charging, fuel cell power generation, car washing and logistics.
The first gas station to be transformed into a multifaceted station is the SK Shihwa Industry Gas Station in Shiheung, Gyeonggi Province. After completing the necessary licensing procedures, the goal is to commence construction within this year.
The existing canopy-style gas station will be replaced by a three-story building for urban-type logistics facilities, housing an indoor gas station.
The building’s rooftop will feature decentralized power facilities, including fuel cells and solar panels. Electricity generated through these facilities will be used to provide EV charging services, aligning with regulatory adjustments.
SK Energy also joined hands with Naver to develop gas stations into urban logistics hubs for small- and medium-sized businesses.
Commencing early next year, the two companies will operate the ‘Kinder Courier’ service, which consolidates various products, enabling small- and medium-sized businesses present on Naver’s Smart Store to streamline their logistics operations more efficiently.
In the medium and long term, SK Energy and Naver plan to collaboratively establish urban-type fulfillment logistics centers (MFCs) at SK gas station sites.
