SEOUL, April 23 (Korea Bizwire) — SK On, a global battery manufacturer, has won a bronze award at the 2023 Edison Awards for its NCM9 battery, the first time a battery manufacturer has won the prize. The NCM9 battery is a high-nickel battery with a nickel content of about 90%, which SK On developed in 2019.
The battery has a high energy density and is superior in terms of range and power output, but the increased nickel content may reduce its lifespan and thermal stability, requiring advanced manufacturing technology.
SK On compensated for this by applying its own ‘Z-folding’ technology, which stacks the battery’s internal separators in a zigzag pattern. Prior to the Edison Awards, the NCM9 battery also won the Innovation Award for the second consecutive year at CES 2023.
