SEOUL, May 13 (Korea Bizwire) — SK Telecom Co. and Microsoft Corp. have agreed to collaborate in cutting-edge ICT areas, including 5G, artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud computing, to foster new business opportunities, the companies said Monday.
The South Korean telecom and U.S. tech giants signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) last week to combine their capabilities, jointly promote Internet of Things (IoT) applications in smart factories and develop AI platforms for new products and services.
The MOU comes three months after the two companies formed a strategic partnership to launch Microsoft’s cloud computing solution Azure with SKT’s big data program Metatron.
The agreement also calls for the integration of SKT’s AI platform and Microsoft’s digital assistant to develop new AI-powered products and services for both consumers and enterprises and collaboration in media and entertainment areas.
“SK Telecom is pleased to join hands with Microsoft as collaboration with global leading companies like Microsoft is essential to gain leadership in the 5G market, where competition is already fierce,” SKT CEO Park Jung-ho said in a release.
