SEOUL, Aug. 21 (Korea Bizwire) — SK Telecom Co., South Korea’s leading mobile carrier, said Wednesday it will open an artificial intelligence (AI) data center using Nvidia’s graphic processing units (GPU) in December.
SK Telecom will join hands with U.S. GPU cloud provider Lambda to transform its existing data center in Seoul into an AI data center, company officials said.
SK Telecom plans to expand the data center’s total GPU units to thousands over the next three years to build the country’s biggest GPU farm.
With the data center, Lambda also plans to open its first Asia-Pacific region in South Korea and SK Telecom will release a GPU-as-a-Service based on Lambda’s GPU resources.
SK Telecom has been working to expand its AI infrastructure business, investing US$20 million in Lambda and $200 million in AI data center solutions company Smart Global Holdings earlier this year.
