Social Media and Video Streaming Apps Lead Mobile Ad Market: Report

SEOUL, June 8 (Korea Bizwire)The global mobile application market exceeded approximately US$500 billion last year, an industry tracker said Wednesday.

According to a recent report from data.ai Inc., mobile advertising generated consumer spending of $336 billion last year, representing a 14 percent increase year on year and accounting for 66.8 percent of the mobile app market.

The growth of the advertising market was led by social media apps and video streaming apps, which collectively generated about half of the advertising spending.

The gaming sector accounted for approximately 35 percent of total mobile advertising. Hyper-casual games and puzzle games, known for their simple gameplay, gained high popularity in the advertising market.

Among domestic mobile advertising income, KakaoTalk, South Korea’s top mobile messenger, secured the first position. It was followed by reward apps CashWalk and OK Cashback, as well as game and utility apps.

Naver Webtoon was the sole non-game app included in the top ten list of app store income, specifically in the category of one-off purchase sales.
