SEOUL, Jul. 18 (Korea Bizwire) — The installed capacity of solar and wind power rose 52 percent on-year in the first half of this year, leading the growth of renewable energy.
Solar energy and wind power accounted for 92.6 percent of the total supply of renewable energy in the first half of the year, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy said Wednesday.
Solar and wind power rose 49.4 percent and 84.4 percent, respectively, from the same period last year.
On the other hand, bioenergy and waste energy dropped by 85.4 percent and 36.9 percent, respectively, due to a reduction of weight of REC (Regenerative Energy Certification) last year.
Overall, a new 1.6 GW renewable energy facility came online in the first half, achieving 66.4 percent of this year’s target of 2.4 GW.
In the first half of this year, 79.8 percent of solar energy modules were used for domestic products, up from 61.5 percent in the first half of last year as well as 72.5 percent in all of last year.
Wind turbines also saw a slight improvement to 59.8 percent at a time when the ratio of domestic product use was sluggish at 39.2 percent last year.
The government aims to raise the ratio of renewable energy generation from the current 7 to 8 percent to 20 percent by 2030 and to 30 to 35 percent by 2040.
