IKSAN, Aug. 27 (Korea Bizwire) – Two South Korean university students have clinched the highest honor at the prestigious 2024 Red Dot Design Award for their groundbreaking medical device design.

Wonkwang University announced on August 27 that Kim Sang-eun and Ma Seo-young, students from its Interior and Industrial Design Department, were awarded the “Best of the Best” in the Medical Product Design category for their innovative syringe design.

The Red Dot Design Award, organized by the Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen in Germany, is renowned as one of the world’s top three design competitions, alongside the German iF Design Award and the American IDEA Design Award.

The students’ winning design features a blood glucose meter and insulin syringe specifically tailored for pediatric diabetes patients. The device’s most notable feature is its needle-free appearance, aimed at alleviating fear and creating a more approachable experience for children.

Beyond its child-friendly aesthetics, the device incorporates advanced functionality. It utilizes a hydraulic motor for gentle blood glucose measurement and insulin administration. Additionally, it embraces modern convenience with its compatibility with the globally standard USB-C type cable for charging.

Professor Ahn Hyun-jung, head of Wonkwang University’s Industrial Design Department, shared the institution’s forward-looking plans.

“We are exploring specialized curriculum options in product design for fields such as medical and life sciences, transportation, agriculture, mobility, military equipment, and consumer goods,” she said. “We aim to deliver innovative education in consultation with industry experts.”
