SEOUL, Feb. 1 (Korea Bizwire) — South Korean tech firms are cutting off support for various add-on services to focus on their primary services and overcome the current economic downturn.
Kakao Corp., the operator of South Korea’s largest messenger app KakaoTalk, shut down a subscription platform service last month.
This service was launched in June 2021 and was bound to become a subscription service providing a wide range of products and services through KakaoTalk.
The customer response, however, fell short of expectations.
Search giant Naver Corp. recently announced that it would shut down its online movie website service in March, after facing fierce competition from contents recommendation service Watcha Pedia.
Financial app Toss also plans to shut down its chat services on Feb. 10.
The chat service was first released in September 2021 and was aggressively marketed, with the company giving out cash to people opening up chatrooms.
However, its performance failed to meet the desired outcome, Toss said.
