SEOUL, Feb. 17 (Korea Bizwire) — Starting this October, Koreans enlisted in mandatory military service will be able to have face-to-face telecom interactions with their families and friends.
The Ministry of National Defense (MND) and Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning (MSIP) inked a MoU on February 16 to establish the video-chat system. The two ministries will start developing the software in May, and will install personal computers at four spots in the army, marine, air and navy camps. The ministries are planning to expand the video-chat system following the initial roll-out at those four spots.
Once the system is in place, army officers will be able to make calls through the personal computers to their parents and friends, who will be able to answer through their smartphones.
The two ministries also agreed to carry out a health care project for air force officers, and to establish educational software courses to officers serving in the military.
