SEOUL, Dec. 14 (Korea Bizwire) — The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety has once again confirmed that volatile organic compounds (VOCs) found in female hygiene products are not life threatening.
The ministry reported on December 13 that tests had been conducted again on 297 different products from sanitary pads to tampons.
Even though VOCs found in female hygiene products were proven safe last year, manufacturers were required to meet newly set standards this year.
The results of the ministry’s investigation showed that the level of VOCs found were largely similar to last year, but 14 types of pesticides and three types of polycyclic hydrocarbons were not found this time.
Levels of acrylic acid were also lower.
Along with the testing for VOCs, another analysis was conducted to test 126 products for phthalates and bisphenol A, with the results confirming that there was no health risk to humans.
The ministry is currently working with five domestic producers of female hygiene products, including Yuhan-Kimberly Ltd. and LG-Unicharm Co., to develop new methods to reduce VOCs.
Five companies came up with solutions, such as changing packaging, using direct adhesives, granting time for the natural ignition of VOCs and strengthening ventilation facilities.
Reflecting the results of regular discussions with the five companies, the ministry has established guidelines to reduce VOCs. These guidelines are mandatory for all manufacturers of female hygiene products starting next year.
The ministry will further monitor the progress and continue to engage in discussions with manufacturers on the matter.
