GANGNEUNG, South Korea, Sept. 8 (Korea Bizwire)Decline in the water storage rate at drought-stricken Gangneung’s main water supply reservoir has slowed down amid an all-out national effort to cope with the unprecedented crisis, municipal officials said Monday.

The water storage rate at the Obong Reservoir stood at 12.2 percent as of 2 p.m. Monday, down 0.2 percentage point from the previous day, the officials said.

Considering that the storage rate has been falling by an average of 0.3 to 0.4 percentage point per day since a state of national disaster was declared for the east coast city, 210 kilometers east of Seoul, 10 days ago, the latest rate of decline has slowed, they noted.

About 400 military vehicles, one Coast Guard ship, five military helicopters and 27 pieces of local and private equipment were mobilized on Sunday to transport and supply 29,716 tons of water for the Obong Reservoir and a water purification plant, according to the Gangneung city government.

An additional 31,000 tons of water will be supplied to the two facilities during Monday, it said.

In a separate measure to reduce water consumption, the city imposed water supply restrictions on 124 places, including apartment complexes and large accommodation facilities with tanks capable of storing more than 100 tons of water.
