SEOUL, March 21 (Korea Bizwire) — Could mobile eSports become the next big thing and replace PC-based games?

Smartphone-based eSports games are gradually solidifying their position as the next generation answer to the eSports industry given the wider smartphone user base and better access to online streaming.

However, with massive hits on PC like PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG) currently dominating the eSports world, skeptics say bringing PCs and other platforms together into one tournament will be among the biggest challenges.

Some of the popular mobile eSports games include Clash Royale by Finnish game maker Supercell, and South Korean RPG game Summoners War, according to the Korea Creative Content Agency (KOCCA)’s latest report on global gaming industry trends.

Clash Royale and Summoners War were named the top two mobile games with the most number of online streamed tournament viewers, reaching 27,7000 and 72,000, respectively, while the multiplayer online battle arena game Vain Glory ranked third.

The report suggested the biggest strength of mobile eSports games is ‘convenience’.

Anyone with a smartphone can watch and join in competitions, with the average length of one round being significantly shorter than for PC games.

With mobile games boasting a much broader range of age groups than their PC counterparts, the KOCCA says a popular mobile game can attract a lot more viewers.

“The rise of mobile eSports platforms like Skillz in the U.S. where users can hold their own tournaments with prize money is worth paying attention to, including the growing volume of prize money as well as the phenomenon of winners becoming stars,” the report said.

Not everything is rosy for mobile eSports games, however, as the broadcasting of smartphone games is widely seen as less entertaining compared to massive hits on PC such as the StarCraft series, Overwatch, and League of Legends.

The report also said the pay-to-win system, which gives advantages to users who pay real money for items, will be an issue for the success of mobile games in the eSports industry, and urged efforts to provide a more level playing field for players.
