SEOUL, July 11 (Korea Bizwire) Many young South Koreans are turning to online blogs to write journals.

The country’s top internet portal operator, Naver Corp. reported that following the ‘weekly journal-writing challenge’ program that encouraged bloggers to write journal entries every week, the number of new blogs jumped by 14 percent, 80 percent of which were opened by users in their 20s and 30s.

They say that blogs allow them to access exclusive features that aren’t available on Instagram.

“Instagram focuses on posting pretty pictures and memorable moments,” said Kim Hee-yeong, a 25-year-old blogger. “I’ve grown tired of having to ‘show off’ every time. Now, I enjoy writing journal entries on my blog.”

Young bloggers are comfortable talking about their personal life online. “I believe talking about the bits and pieces of my personal life shows how special I am,” said Kim Seo-yeon, 23.

Searching ‘weekly journals’ on the portal website showed information that can be used to track down where the bloggers live and work.

“It is psychologically quite satisfying for them to talk about themselves,” said Kwak Geum-joo, a professor of psychology at Seoul National University.

“The satisfaction they feel as they write down their personal stories makes them less aware of the fact that they are exposing their privacy.”
