SEOUL, Jan. 18 (Korea Bizwire) — Samsung Electronics Co. has sought exclusive trademark rights to Micro QLED and 8K QLED, a government agency said Thursday, a move that has sparked speculation over whether the South Korean tech giant could roll out a new television brand.
Samsung Electronics applied earlier this month for the trademark rights with the Korea Intellectual Property Rights Information Service, a unit run by the Korean Intellectual Property Office.
The QLED TVs make use of so-called quantum-dot technology, which are semiconductor nanocrystals that Samsung says improve display brightness, contrast and power efficiency.
In comparison, Samsung’s rival LG Electronics Inc. makes organic light-emitting diode (OLED) TVs, which require backlighting.
Micro QLED is noteworthy for being different from the world’s first modular MicroLED 146-inch TV, called “The Wall,” which Samsung unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) earlier this month.
Trademark rights to the name 8K QLED appear to refer to the 8K QLED TV unveiled by Samsung at the CES.
Samsung said on its website that it plans to launch the world’s first QLED TV featuring 8K artificial intelligence technology during the second half of 2018.
