SEOUL, Nov. 19 (Korea Bizwire) — Hyundai Oilbank Co., a major South Korean oil refiner, said Thursday that it will begin producing eco-friendly naptha from pyrolysis oil made by melting plastic waste.
The company plans to conduct an empirical study by injecting 100 tons of pyrolysis oil into the refining process and will gradually expand the amount once safety issues are resolved.
Eco-friendly naphtha produced from the process will be sent to a local petrochemical company to make new plastic.
“We are also considering building a new plant that uses plastic waste to produce 50,000 tons of pyrolysis oil each year,” Hyundai Oilbank CEO Kang Dal-ho said.
The company’s central technological institute is conducting research on how to improve the quality of pyrolysis oil to produce petroleum or petrochemical products.
Hyundai Oilbank plans to obtain the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification and commercialize the eco-friendly ‘green naphtha’.
