SEOUL, May 5 (Korea Bizwire) — A significant number of children believe that people are discriminated against based on their gender or wealth in South Korea, a survey showed Wednesday.
The Korean Teachers and Educational Workers Union conducted a survey of 1,841 children from 4th to 6th grade, 64.7 percent of whom believed that there is no sexual discrimination in the country.
At 69.9 percent, more than two-thirds believed that people aren’t discriminated against by their wealth.
Another 67.5 percent of the children believed the country doesn’t discriminate against disabled persons.
Around 75 percent believed they are respected in society, while 64.1 percent believed they are respected online.
The level of belief grew among older children (4th grade 18.6 percent, 5th grade 24.1 percent and 6th grade 27.1 percent).
Fourth-graders had the highest proportion of children who were against the belief that they are being respected in cyberspace (38.5 percent).
A higher proportion of children believed they are respected at home (92.2 percent) and at school (91 percent).
Among the respondents, 72 percent said they had never been subjected to verbal or physical assault, while 20.8 percent experienced verbal assault from their friends, followed by siblings (9.2 percent), fathers (3.5 percent) and mothers (3.2 percent).
