SEOUL, April 21 (Korea Bizwire) — Samsung Display Co., the display arm of Samsung Electronics Co., said Thursday it plans to use 20,000 tons of recycled cement for the construction of its new building.
The cement will be made from waste glass generated during the display production process.
The new building is expected to be completed in the latter half of next year, and the recycled cement will account for approximately 34 percent of the total cement required for the construction.
Samsung Display began recycling waste glass in 2008 and has since recycled all waste generated from its display production process. To date, the company has recycled 245,000 tons of waste glass.
“Typically, the production of 1 ton of glass requires around 0.8 tons of sand,” stated an official with Samsung Display. He went on to mention, “By recycling 245,000 tons of sand, we have amassed enough to build a white sand beach equivalent in size to Haeundae Beach in Busan.”
As Samsung Display shifts production towards flexible organic light-emitting diode (OLED) panels, which generate less polluting waste compared to liquid-crystal display (LCD) panel production, recycling efficiency is expected to improve further in the future.
