WONJU, May 2 (Korea Bizwire) —Wonju, a city in Gangwon Province, aims to become a hub city for sports tourism and has formed a special task force to promote it by discovering various leisure resources and attracting tourists to the region.
Despite its natural environment and proximity to the Seoul metropolitan area, the city’s sports tourism lags behind other cities. To address this, Wonju plans to actively discover new businesses such as mountain sports like mountain biking on Mount Chiak and rafting on the Seom River, as well as attracting e-sports competitions.
In addition to winter sports, the city aims to promote itself as a destination for outdoor activities such as hiking and cycling, and establish more cultural and tourist attractions.
Wonju is already known for its winter sports facilities, including a ski resort, and plans to further develop these facilities to attract more visitors. With these efforts, Wonju hopes to become a leading destination for sports tourism in the region.
