YESAN, May 22 (Korea Bizwire) — A local pig farm has adopted a ventilation system typically utilized in chip factories to combat unpleasant odors.
A two-story pig farm spanning 2,997 square meters was established in Yesan, South Chungcheong province last month.
Externally, the building bears resemblance to a museum or government office.
Farm owner Park Kyung-won invested a total of 6.54 billion won (U$$4.94 million) starting in August of last year to establish a modernized pig farm equipped with an advanced air ventilation system.
The previous pig farm operated by Park emitted significant odors, resulting in numerous civil complaints and heightened susceptibility to diseases among the pigs.
Consequently, after analyzing airflow using a program commonly employed for general building design, he devised an efficient ventilation system and commenced the construction of a new pig farm.
He implemented a downward-type ventilation system, commonly utilized in chip factories.

Through this system, the concentration of ammonia gas within the farm was reduced to a range of 5 to 8 parts per million (ppm).
Furthermore, the ammonia density surrounding the farm remains consistently low at approximately 1 ppm following the installation of the odor reduction system.
Currently, Park is rearing 100 Duroc pigs on this farm and intends to expand the number to 350 in the future.
