NAMWON, July 19 (Korea Bizwire) — A rare puffball mushroom has been spotted once again at an orchard in the foothills of Mount Jiri for the 10th consecutive year.
The puffball mushroom was recently found in an apple orchard owned by Joo Ji-hwan, a 60-year-old farmer from Namwon, North Jeolla Province. It has a ball-like shape with a diameter of about 22 centimeters and a pale brown color.
“Usually, it appears between late July and early August. However, this year it was detected around 10 to 15 days earlier, likely due to climate change,” he said.
Since 2014, puffball mushrooms have been discovered at this orchard every year, with over 20 mushrooms detected thus far.
According to experts, the mycelium of the mushroom remains in the orchard and grows every summer when the necessary growth conditions are met.
