SEOUL, Sept. 20 (Korea Bizwire) – Hyundai Motor and Kia Corp. announced on Tuesday the commencement of a navigation solution demonstration project, ‘Universal Mobility 2.0,’ aimed at assisting the movement of vulnerable pedestrians, including the visually impaired, in Singapore.
Universal Mobility is a smart city project undertaken by Hyundai and Kia to provide a futuristic urban environment and mobility solutions enabling unrestricted movement for everyone, including vulnerable pedestrians.
Universal Mobility 2.0 is a follow-up project to EnableLA, a car-hailing service demonstration conducted by Hyundai and Kia in Los Angeles from August 2021 to February 2022.
The project aims to enhance convenience for vulnerable road users, including visually impaired individuals and wheelchair users.
EnableLA, the 1.0 version of Universal Mobility, helps wheelchair users hire a driver via a mobile app, with a specially trained chauffeur ensuring safe transportation to the desired destination.
For EnableLA, Hyundai and Kia remodeled vehicles like the Hyundai Palisade and Kia Telluride to accommodate wheelchair transportation, improving convenience for vulnerable pedestrians.
Universal Mobility 2.0 aims to facilitate the movement of vulnerable pedestrians, including visually impaired individuals, ensuring they encounter no impediments when walking, both before and after boarding the vehicles.
The demonstration project is scheduled to be carried out for nine weeks at the Enabling Village, a community and education campus for disabled people in Singapore.
A tailored route-based navigation solution is provided to allow individuals with disabilities, especially those visiting the campus for the first time, to move freely both indoors and outdoors.
Vulnerable pedestrians can access road guidance to destinations within the campus or location information for the surrounding areas through the navigation provided in a mobile application format.
