SEOUL, Aug. 26 (Korea Bizwire) – In a significant shift towards smarter home appliance control, Samsung Electronics reports that one in two users of its 2024 air conditioner models are opting for smartphone apps and voice recognition over traditional remote controls.

According to data released by Samsung on August 25, an analysis of 24,798 domestic floor-standing air conditioner units sold between May and July revealed that 18% of users preferred the newly introduced Quick Remote feature. An additional 29% utilized voice recognition systems based on SmartThings and Bixby platforms.

The Quick Remote function allows users to control their air conditioners via smartphone when in close proximity to the unit.

This feature, currently available on select 2023 and 2024 air conditioner models, dehumidifiers, and robot vacuums, is set to expand to kitchen and living appliances such as refrigerators, ovens, induction cooktops, washing machines, dryers, and clothing care systems by year’s end.

While Quick Remote simplifies individual device control, the SmartThings app offers a comprehensive solution for managing multiple connected devices and energy savings.

Bixby’s voice recognition capabilities extend beyond air conditioner control, allowing users to adjust settings, check weather updates, and even control other smart home devices.

In response to this trend, Samsung plans to gradually phase out traditional remotes. For this year’s floor-standing air conditioner models, the company has already made remote controls an optional purchase.

“As more consumers prefer multi-device connectivity experiences linking home appliances with mobile devices, the Quick Remote feature has been receiving enthusiastic responses since its initial launch,” said Yoo Miyoung, Vice President of Samsung’s Digital Appliances Business.

“We will continue to popularize and advance various appliance control methods in line with the AI home appliance era.”
