GOESAN, South Korea, July 27 (Korea Bizwire) – These are not crop circles. They are rice paddy artworks created by planting various colors of rice plants. The project first took off in 2008, and was spearheaded by local governments in North Chungcheong Province to promote the region and its produce.
The Chungju Agriculture Technology Center created an image of United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon in a rice paddy in Chungju, while its Goesan County counterpart designed an image of Sun Wukong, also known as the Monkey King, a mythological figure featured in the 16th century Chinese novel Journey to the West.
“We’ve been presenting these rice paddy artworks every year, and they have been a tremendous help in promoting our county and its organic produce,” said a Goesan County official.
