SEOUL, May 23 (Korea Bizwire) – The American horror film “Get Out” had a big opening weekend at the South Korean box office, topping the 10 million viewer mark in its fifth day of running, according to a market tracker on Monday.
The movie, about a young black man who falls victim to his girlfriend’s white suburban family, attracted 802,981 cinemagoers during the May 19-21 weekend for 1,004,008 domestic viewers total, according to the Korean Film Council (KOFIC).
Released on May 17, the Blumhouse/Universal’s Jordan Peele thriller has topped the daily local box office for four consecutive days since its second day of running.
The runner-up was “The Merciless,” one of the Korean films invited to this year’s Cannes Film Festival. Starring Seol Kyung-gu and Im Si-wan, the film has sold 376,712 tickets.
The crime-action thriller depicts the friendship and betrayal of an underboss of a large-scale drug trafficking ring and a policeman who goes undercover in jail to investigate the organization.
“King Arthur: Legend of the Sword” climbed fourth notches to third. The British-Australian-American action fantasy sold 209,578 tickets on its opening weekend.
DreamWorks Animation’s “The Boss Baby,” however, fell one spot to fourth with 193,756 views on its third weekend.
Rounding out the top five was “Alien: Covenant,” the latest from Ridley Scott. It was seen by 133,721 viewers.
