SEOUL, June 9 (Korea Bizwire)South Korea plans to install artificial intelligence (AI)-based CCTV cameras at major railway stations aimed at detecting any occurrence of crimes and reporting them instantly to the police.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport said Wednesday it will contract a research study for the installation of anti-crime AI CCTV systems at major railway stations.

On the basis of the results of the study, the government will establish an AI video information analysis system optimized for the prevention of railway crimes from October, and complete the installation of about 5,000 AI CCTV cameras at major railway stations by 2024.

Under the new system, if crimes occur at major railway stations, AI CCTV cameras would detect and inform railroad police of their occurrence immediately.

The ministry plans to minimize blind spots by optimizing the location and viewing angle of the new CCTV cameras.

For instance, if the AI CCTV system detects someone who is secretly taking photos or videos of others walking up stairs at railway stations, it will deliver the information to railroad police in real time, ensuring an on-the-spot arrest.

If CCTV footage is analyzed by a person, it takes about one hour to detect such incidents. However, the AI system can shorten the CCTV footage analysis time just to six minutes, enabling a swift response to crimes.
